The First Great Trial Lawyer: Cicero.

From from one of the many great books--all written centuries ago, and in his library long before I was born--my grandfather, Dr. J. Dan Hull, educator-turned-government official, gave me after he finished his career in Washington, D.C., and returned to Springfield, Missouri:
