Prepare to Hurl: Megan's Law for Law Students.

And Dean Mentschikoff rolls twice over in her grave. Via Hull McGuire Of Counsel Greenfield and fellow Buckeye Gamso, view this from a University of Miami law student and both Greenfield and Gamso's posts:

"All about me, 24/7". Would you trust her with a Client for 5 minutes?

Sorry, Sweetie, but you're in training to be a Servant--not a Grand Dame. Can you imagine this young person in a few years with any good clients that stick? Lots of issues here. But how about Bills Of Rights for Wealthy Obese Teenagers, Underachievers, and St. Louis Cotillion Participants?

The first day I heard him play?
I thought he was the best.
I still think he's the best.

Wild Thing: Mayor Emanuel.

We need to get used to it. He's The Man now. See in the Chicago Tribune Bob Secter's article "A Raft of Promises, a Boatload of Problems". Excerpt:

When he succeeds Richard M. Daley in May, Emanuel will immediately inherit a city with a stark divide between haves and have-nots, a chronically underachieving school system, a crumbling transportation infrastructure and a police department that is seriously understaffed.

What's more, the business and job-generating engine was sputtering even before the recession took hold, new census data shows Chicago is losing residents, costly parking meters and high property taxes remain flashpoints, and long-term neglect of public-worker pension funds has backed the city into a financial corner.

Ms. Golden: How to Mishandle Specialization.

This is a clip professionals in America and abroad should watch. Short, packed, maybe surprising--and right to the point. And Michelle Golden is a Flat-Out Total Betty.

Killer Dana

Killer_Dana_Point.jpg

The Wave: It was Gnarly. It came out of deep water and broke close to the rocks that lined the beach. Hardcore Orange County surfers--some of them world-class and famous--were not happy in 1966 when the Army Corps of Engineers killed Killer Dana by making a recreational harbor at Dana Point.

The Economist: After Mubarak.

For the long view of "what Egypt means", do see this one: The Autumn of the Patriarchs. Excerpts:

Since the fall of Mr Mubarak, numerous mini-revolutions have taken place across Egypt. Journalists have overthrown their editors, workers their union leaders, professors their university deans. Even the police have returned to the streets, striking to demand the removal of the senior officers they blame for their disgrace.

For the rest of the region, the attraction of these revolutions goes beyond the satisfaction of seeing despised dictators hounded from office. During Egypt’s long period of stagnation under Mr Mubarak, Cairo, once the undisputed centre of the Arab world, was increasingly eclipsed by such upstarts as Dubai and Beirut.

Now, suddenly, the heroic imagery and rousing lyrics of Egypt’s revolution permeate Arab airwaves.

Dana Point, California

This small southern California coastal city was named after Richard Henry Dana Jr. (1815-1882), the Massachusetts-bred lawyer and politician who wrote an American classic.

Mike O'Neil on Egypt: What's Next?

See O'Neil's fine "Now the Hard Part for Egypt", which appeared yesterday in The Huffington Post and elsewhere. Excerpt:

The caretakers of the transition are the military. The thing to watch for are key institutional reforms. Release of political prisoners would be a good start. Then look to whether the press begins to operate independently of government control: do they regularly and freely criticize the regime?

And look for the revocation of the blank check "emergency rule" which permits almost unlimited and unconstrained government action. It the military intent is to produce a democratic system in Egypt, these could and should begin almost immediately.

Stock Market Weekly: Investment trends in energy markets.

See the Alex Willams Interview by Kent Moors. There's a trace of wishful thinking and (as usual) an agenda here--but it's certainly worth a look. A nice snapshot of trends in both fossil fuels and and non-traditional sources in the shifting Energy Mix. Plus: "The energy market will be driven by demand and China is the new 800-pound gorilla in the room. It is a barometer of demand activities globally." A mention of nuclear, too. And a dash of Methane as a the new multi-colored work-horse of the future.

Duke Undergraduates: Neuroscience on the Brain.

Economic models leave room for questions—they don’t explain the irrationalities we witness in the markets every day. Neuroeconomics, on the other hand, could get there.

--Andrea Mihic, 20, Duke Economics major.

Straight Dope from Home of The Dope Shop. This semester, there are 119 Duke students in the new Neuroscience major. Eleven graduated with Neuroscience degrees last year. Can America please resurrect "Bullying" at work? Before it's too late?

Tough Professions, Tough Choices. Either we Get in the Game--or we Get Out. Sounds harsh--but it's 100% true. It's one of the few absolutes for upper-level execs and managers, officers, owners, leaders and professionals.

In our view, most of you--the vast majority--are mailing it in. And you are hurting others. Maybe a career change?

There are lots of satisfying careers where you can't as easily compromise Clients, Customers, Buyers, Patients, Fiduciaries and even your Employer--people who count on you in callings where your work for them really counts.

Lawyering, too, by the way, isn't a dodge. Not for people who work to feel good about themselves for 2 hours a week, i.e., on Friday nights in a bar with other lawyer friends. There has to be more. It's an honor to be a lawyer--and a huge responsibility.

Thank you, Eric L. Mayer and Military Underdog.
